The Medic Insight Model

A week-long programme accounts for difficulties encountered in previous areas whilst creating a structured link between individuals and groups involved with organising work experience for school students.

Activities

With a view to providing a true and informed overview of the range of options available in a medical career the programme included 'plenary' sessions at two points during the week-long programme.

  • Students from a range of schools were brought together with introductory and team-building activities
  • Clinical skills were outlined to students, with access to the labs and supervised practice sessions
  • Short lectures provided introductions to the vast range of fields within medicine, dispelling any stereotypes of doctors, and including less well known fields such as academic medicine
  • Group sessions, hosted by medical students, opened discussions on medical school life, interviews and ethical debates

School Students

School students, in the summer before their application to university, receive a unique exposure to a varied and representative sample of 'being a doctor'. Each morning and afternoon, they rotate between specialties and gain exposure to doctors of different grades.

They are additionally supported with comprehensive guidance on locations and provided with introductory materials on each specialty to allow them to maximise their experience.

Logistics

Applications from students are linked to availability from clinicians in a semi-automated software driven process to create a programme that allows for flexibility in clinical schedules but wide exposure and variability within a student's timetable.

The process is linked with existing platforms, including Pathways to Professions and the NHS Work Placements Unit, enabling comprehensive coverage of under-represented state schools as well as ensuring seamless contractual and health and safety cover for all those taking part.

Clinicians

Doctors are offered the opportunity to timetable highly flexible and variable slots that suit their schedules.

- No minimum commitment is required with doctors being able to take as many or as few students for as many or as few slots as they wish.

Clinicians are provided with simple to use availability forms which are accessible online, via e-mail or in hardcopy.

Scheduling is confirmed close-to-slot to keep clinicians informed.

Where schedules change, clinicians are provided with a contact point to quickly and easily reschedule or cancel.

Where relevant, groups (for example GPs/Junior Doctors) were provided with guidance handbooks on the week and student expectations.
